With Eutaw bein' jest a small town out here in the Alabama Black Belt, there ain't much opportunity for great and excitin' thangs to happen. But when they does, the whole town shore knows about it in a hurry. Now, here in Eutaw, the menfolks tends to gather down to the Bait & Beer Store, knowed in these parts as the B&B (not to be mixed-up with that Oakmont B&B, what is a bed & breakfast run by Mis' Deborah Stone and is knowed as the Oakmont B&B). Well, we wuz all down to the B&B t'other day, and Charlie Ben McFierson, what farms out in the county, wuz a'tellin' us 'bout what happened to him las' week. Him and his mule wuz out a'plowing when these tourists-folks pulled up in a car and wanted to know if'n thar wuz any old houses out in them parts. He tolt 'em thar wuz the old Katy Belle Johnson place on down the road a'piece. They wanted to know if'n hit wuz "anti-bellum". Charlie Ben didn't know what hit wuz they wuz a'talkin' about. He says he didn't know if'n they wuz askin' wuz hit de-skunked, de-snaked, or what. So, he jus' tolt 'em he supposed so, and they seemed right happy about that and went off on down the road. He pondered this here "-bellum" business fer a'while. Then he seen Lawyer Eustis Snellgrove a'comin' and flagged him down. With all his book-learnin' and all, Charlie Ben figured Lawyer Snellgrove could enlighten him. When Charlie Ben tolt him 'bout what hoppened and axed what this here "-bellum" mess wuz, Lawyer Snellgrove jus' shook his head and drove off, still a'shakin' his head. Charlie Ben says he knowed 'bout "anti-slavery", "anti-prohibition", "anti-Nazi", and sich, so he figures it's got sumpin' to do with the gov'ment. And, if hit wuz so bad that Lawyer Snellgrove didn't want to talk about hit, hit sho' must be AWFUL bad. He says frum now on if'n anybody else axed him, he's sho' gonna be "anti-bellum", 'cause he don't want to be knowed the rest of his life as a "pro-bellum". Jus' shows ya' what fine, up-standin', conservative principles we live by down here. Well, that's jus' some of the doin's down here in Eutaw,
Alabama....whar the grass is a little greener; the air, a little
cleaner; and all the folks is mighty fiendly.
